Principal of elite school retires after cheating scandal

NEW YORK

Stuyvesant (STEYE'-vuh-sehnt) High School Principal Stan Teitel announced his retirement Friday in a letter posted on the school's website. Teital says he is stepping down after 13 years to devote energy to his family and "personal endeavors."

In June, a Stuyvesant student photographed the state Regents Spanish exam and texted it to 69 other students.

The student who sent the text faces suspension. All of the students involved will be banned from some student groups and lose privileges such as having lunch off campus.

Students in New York state must pass tests in at least five subjects for a Regents diploma.
