Police: Homeowner stabs man burglarizing home

FARMINGVILLE

Alex Debono had his mugshot taken in a hospital gown because he was injured while leaving the scene of the alleged crime.

Police say a Farmingville homeowner stabbed Debono in the leg while the two struggled in the backyard.

That homeowner had gotten home Monday to see a man leaving the house by a window. He grabbed a knife from his car and confronted the intruder, who was also armed with a knife, at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Police say Debono attempted to flee through the backyard, and a struggle ensued. After he was injured, Debono was able to escape after he climbed over a fence and fled to a nearby Kmart.

Officer Daniel Furey apprehended Debono as he attempted to leave the store. Items stolen from the victim's home, including a watch and an Xbox, were recovered in the store's bathroom.

Dobono is charged with first-degree burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
