Police chase and crash leaves 1 dead in Irvington

IRVINGTON

The car that authorities were trying to stop slammed into a telephone pole and a tree at the intersection of Sanford Avenue and Clements Place in /*Irvington*/.

The crash left a 13-year-old boy dead.

Police were chasing the Jaguar, which was stolen earlier Sunday afternoon and then spotted around 10 p.m. Officers tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver took off. About 20 minutes later, the stolen car struck another car, the tree and the pole. The rims of the tires etched grooves in the asphalt before the car came to a screeching stop.

A handgun was also recovered in the vehicle, police said.

James was described as a runaway who lost his way.

Officials said an occupant of the other vehicle involved in the collision was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact task force detectives at (877) 847-7432 or (973) 621-4586.
