Expensive silver items stolen from synagogue

NEW YORK

Dressed In a white shirt and a Yamaka the suspect looked just like everyone else.

But instead of going into the prayer room, surveillance video shows he went downstairs and kind of moseyed around, even grabbing a prayer book.

Then it was on to another room where the man picked up an empty white plastic bag that had been lying around for hours.

He disappears off camera for about four minutes and then appears again with something now in that bag.

If you look closely you can see a silver object.

Two expensive silver crowns are now missing from the synagogue basement.

"The silver was right here," said George Srolovits, executive director of /*Young Israel of Queens Valley*/.

George Srolovits, the synagogue's executive director, says they think the theft happened sometime last Thursday night.

It wasn't until Saturday when someone noticed they were missing.

"The first thought was someone took it to polish it not thinking someone would steal from a house of worship," Srolovits said.

But then, they reviewed the surveillance cameras and realized it appears that's exactly what happened.

"We've sent the picture to other synagogues as well and no one has reported that they know who this person is," Srolovits said.

Even more disturbing, Srolovits says they just noticed Wednesday it appears a silver breast plate and a silver pointer are also unaccounted for.

The four items would sell for about $3,000.

A picture of the suspect is now posted on the same door he came in, so members know who to look for.

"I will definitely keep an eye out. I walk through this neighborhood about 2.5 hours a day, I like walking I see a lot of faces," said Sam Levy, a congregant.
