New Haven school bus firm, union in contract talks

NEW HAVEN

Negotiations with First Student Inc. ended Thursday night after a protest by drivers.

A spokeswoman for the company said it was very pleased with negotiations on Thursday and that talks will continue next week.

Ben Phillips, spokesman for CSEA/SEIU Local 2001, says talks are productive but added that a strike is still possible. The last contract expired June 30.

The union said drivers have voted to strike if an agreement is not reached.

The New Haven Register reports that drivers have concerns about pay, student safety - in particular, badly behaved students who ride the buses - and other issues.
