Search after reports of missing diver

NEW YORK

Eyewitnesses notified authorities after 3 p.m. that a diver went missing although those reports are unconfirmed at this time.

The search is ongoing near the Breezy Point Surf Club.

A 911 call was made saying a 29-year-old man went into the water to either scuba dive or snorkel and is now missing.

The caller said he was last seen at some point Friday morning.

It's unclear if he was diving off of a boat, or off shore. It's very possible he may have left on his own accord.

The Coast Guard, NYPD and FDNY are all assisting in the search.

"The Coast Guard is working together with NYPD and FDNY to search for the missing diver off of Breezy Point," said Lt. j.g. Fannie Wilks, a search and rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector New York's Command Center. "At this time, multiple marine and aviation units are responding. We ask the public's assistance in remaining vigilant if they are in the vicinity of the search area and to contact the Coast Guard if they have further information."

Officials say the man may have safely exited the water without being seen.
