Spectators stand behind Bronx tiger after mauling

NEW YORK

Spectators wanted to catch a peek of 400-pound Bachuta, the tiger who went after trespasser David Villalobos after he scaled a fence into the tiger's enclosure on Friday.

The crowds at the zoo Sunday said they didn't think the tiger did anything wrong.

Villalobos, who is charged with trespassing, is in the hospital being treated for bites, broken bones and a collapsed lung.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne says the 25-year-old Villalobos told investigators he deliberately leaped into a zoo exhibit because he wanted to "be one with the tiger."

Browne says that when a police officer asked Villalobos why he did it, he responded, "Everybody in life makes choices."
