Authorities say 46-year-old Salvatore Buonauro broke into the Pastoral Center at Sacred Heart Church in North Merrick.
An unknown amount of cash and gift cards were stolen.
The elementary school on the church property was also broken in to, but nothing was taken.
Police arrested Buonauro, a local resident and regular at the church outreach center.
He was apparently recognized on surveillance video.
