Brooklyn "Zone B" residents assess flood damage

CANARSIE

/*Canarsie*/ and /*Gerritsen Beach*/ do not get FEMA assistance, because they are not located in "Zone A".

Canarsie resident Sharon Perceval lost her car and everything in the first two floors of her home, including her boiler, washer and dryer, and even her water soaked walks.

The worst part she says is the feeling of being ignored by /*FEMA*/, the very agency that is supposed to help families like hers.

Hundreds of homeowners in Canarsie complain they are being denied federal aid because they don't live in an evacuation zone. However when Jamaica Bay came roaring into their homes they say the suffered just as much as other hard hit areas.

Residents insist they don't begrudge other areas like Staten Island for getting aid and attention and federal help, they just want FEMA to take a more sympathetic look at their backyards and their homes.

Residents argue there has to be a more balanced and fair way to determine compensation. Meanwhile many blocks in Brooklyn remain in the dark and in the cold.
