Apollo 17 astronauts honored at Adler Planetarium

November 13, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Two of the astronauts on board that Apollo flight Gene Cernan and Harrison Jack Schmitt were honored at Chicago's Adler Planetarium Tuesday.

Cernan, the driver of the lunar rover, still freshly remembers the incredible view on the moon.

Gene Cernan grew up in Bellwood and attended Proviso High School. He believes that the moon offers an excellent habitat for visiting other planets.

Harrison Schmitt was a geologist on the mission. He believes that we could use some of the lunar resources here on earth such as a light isotope called helium 3.

In honor of these space pioneers, including Apollo 13 astronaut James Lovell, the Adler Planetarium had their hand and foot prints immortalized in concrete.
