It goes on all day, every day: heavy machinery tackling a seemingly endless pile of debris. The parking lot of the /*Ramapo*/ town pool has been transformed into a clearinghouse for all the trees and limbs knocked down during Hurricane Sandy.
Like most Rockland County communities, Ramapo didn't flood but it did suffer wind damage. For two weeks crews have been out clearing roads as well as taking the debris left curbside by homeowners.
In the shore community of Piermont, there's debris as well. In the form of water-logged, flood damaged items that need to be thrown out. The demand has overwhelmed the tiny village's resources.
Back in Ramapo, the town is allowing residents and contractors to dump their tree-related debris off. They are trying anything to speed up the process.
Crews have been working 10 hour shifts, including during weekends and holidays. The good news is most of the costs will be reimbursed by the federal government.
