Online courses to help NYC Sandy victim students

NEW YORK

City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced the online learning initiative Tuesday.

Students in grades 6 through 12 who have been displaced from their homes are eligible to enroll in the courses. Students who have been reassigned to other schools while their schools are being repaired are eligible as well.

Classes will be available in core subjects and electives including English, math, economics and world history.

The New York, Queens and Brooklyn Public Library systems will provide Internet access for students without computers at home.

Teachers with experience teaching online courses will lead the classes. The teachers will hold weekly office hours using video conferencing and the phone.
