Some drugs a bad mix with grapefruit, study finds

NEW YORK

Grapefruit juice, when combined with certain drugs can cause kidney and respiratory failure, intestinal bleeding and even death, according to the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The reaction occurs because a component in grapefruit inhibits an enzyme in the body and multiplies the dosage of the drug.

Antibiotics and high cholesterol medications are among 85 drugs that can adversely interact with grapefruit juice.

Forty-three of these can have serious side effects, the researchers said.

Other medical experts, including those with the American Heart Association, advised that further study is needed.
