New York Archdiocese healthcare lawsuit to procede

A federal judge has cleared the way for the Catholic Archdiocese of New York to proceed with a lawsuit challenging a requirement that employee healthcare plans cover contraceptives.

The lawsuit is one of several brought by dozens of Catholic institutions.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had asked District Judge Brian Cogan to dismiss the lawsuit, calling it premature.

But Cogan denied the motion, saying the archdiocese was already preparing to incur millions in expenses over the requirement.
