Residents continue to wait for FEMA trailers

Despite requests from the governor, residents hit by Hurricane Sandy still have not gotten temporary housing in FEMA trailers.

Spend 10 minutes driving through Union Beach and you understand why this battered town has lost faith in FEMA.

"Are you surprised six weeks after storm, no trailers?" asked Eyewitness News investigative reporter Jim Hoffer.

"Pretty much because we were told they would be here. You know, but nobody has gotten back to us," said Joe Mauer, a Union Beach resident.

Like many families, the Mauer's must rebuild which has forced them to live with relatives, a welcome that has worn thin.

A trailer, they say, would provide them much needed privacy and bring families back together.

"Same with all the neighbors on the block, they're all over the place, they're displaced right now," Mauer said.

"We needed our own space, Christmas was coming and I wanted the kids to be settled," said Katie Osterich, a Union Beach resident.

This mother of two got tired of waiting for FEMA trailers. She went out and leased one of her own.

"Why not wait for FEMA trailer?" Hoffer asked.

"Because there was no word of FEMA trailers coming, nothing, we had nothing!" Osterich said.

"Well, where are the trailers, if the Governor has requested them, where are they?" Hoffer asked.

"FEMA is not providing them. FEMA is simply not providing them," said Congressman Frank Pallone, (D) New Jersey.

Congressman Pallone says he's finally got the agency to commit to delivering trailers to New Jersey's hardest hit areas.

"I'm not willing to accept the fact that because someone staying at a relative's house or a hotel they don't need this temporary housing, they do. And that's why I'm going to insist on it," Rep. Pallone said.
