Governo Cuomo appoints Waldman new LIPA chairman

NEW YORK

Two Cuomo administration officials confirmed the Long Island Power Authority appointment of Lawrence Waldman on Tuesday. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because a formal announcement hadn't been made.

More than a million customers lost power after the October storm. Some remained in the dark for more than two weeks.

Waldman's appointment is meant to stabilize LIPA while the probe continues.

Waldman is a LIPA trustee and chairman of its board's finance and audit committee. He replaces Howard Steinberg, whose resignation in November followed those of LIPA's chief operating officer, a trustee and a vice president of customer service.

Cuomo also appointed RXR Realty president Michael Maturo as a LIPA trustee.
