Jesus statue stolen from front of Brooklyn church

The sight of the empty pedestal led to shock and heartbreak last week, outside the rectory of Saints Peter and Paul church in Brooklyn, New York.

A surveillance camera captured the theft, by a lone suspect. The crime is being investigated by police.

The statue was nearly four feet high, made of stone, and had to be lifted over the short fence in front of the building.

The statue is valued at only a few hundred dollars, and police are said to be investigating the theft as a possible hate crime.

But some neighborhood residents believe it was something more.
