Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced Thursday that the city is looking for a company to keep running the ferry after a three-year test period ends in June 2014. The extension would be for at least five years.
Officials had projected the boats would carry about 1.3 million passengers during the entire test period. But they already have ferried more than 1.6 million riders.
BillyBey Ferry Co. now runs the service. Ferries stop at East 34th Street and Pier 11 in Manhattan, Long Island City in Queens and several Brooklyn neighborhoods. They also run to Governors Island on summer weekends.
