Windy weather causes holiday travel delays

NEW YORK

At Newark Airport, strong wind gusts delayed arrivals by more than 40 minutes for much of the day.

Passengers at Kennedy Airport experienced delays of over an hour and a half.

But by Saturday night, winds had died down and the FAA was reporting no significant delays.

Among the highest gusts reported Saturday were 48 miles an hour in White Plains, and 45 in Westhampton.

Across the country, nearly 100 million people are traveling this weekend to their holiday destinations.

Severe storms in the Midwest caused holiday travel problems for people in the Tri-State area on Friday, when area airports cancelled nearly 200 flights.

There were more than 650 flights canceled around the country, and more than 8,000 reported delays.

Most of the canceled flights were in and out of Chicago.

Southwest airlines plans to resume service to Midway Airport sometime on Saturday.
