Thefts of electronic gadgets up 33 percent in New York City

NEW YORK

The NYPD is reporting that thefts of high-priced iPads, iPhones, and other electronic gadgets are skyrocketing, with over 15,000 swiped in 2012.

That's an increase of over 3,000 from last year, or 33 percent.

The NYPD is urging Apple owners to register their products so they can be traced if stolen.

Mayor Bloomberg says the spike in thefts of Apple products has been a contributing factor in a 3 percent increase in the city's overall crime rate.
