LIRR train strikes car on tracks; no injuries

NEW YORK

Train service was temporarily suspended after the eastbound train struck the vehicle on the tracks, just east of Wyandanch, around 6 p.m.

Authorities say 25-year-old Luke Harris, of Bay Shore, had just rented the Chevy sedan and accidentally turned onto the tracks after leaving the rental agency.

One of the tires became wedged at Commack Road in Deer Park. That'is when the panicked driver tried to push the car off the tracks.

The train operator slammed on the brakes, but could not stop.

It crashed into the car just after Harris jumped to safety.

No injuries were reported.
