Glastonbury approves money for school guards

GLASTONBURY

The town council approved the school board recommendations, which includes $485,000 for swipe cards, buzzers/intercoms and cameras and locks in classrooms.

Perhaps the most controversial measure is $128,000 for security guards during school hours.

The superintendent wanted to hire security guards at night and on the weekends, but the council did not approve that. Instead, they are hiring a consultant to look at security and what is needed.

Many cities and towns want to improve security after the tragedy in Newtown, but the question is where do they get the money.

The town council is taking money from two other funds to pay for the security, but members feel it's worth it.

And if the board of finance agrees, the changes will be made during this school year.
