Authorities say New York City police officers shot and wounded a man who was pointing a gun at them.

The Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/WHyNku ) reports the incident happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The two officers had approached a man who matched a description of a suspect in a home burglary.

Authorities say the man fled, followed by the officers, and then turned and pointed a handgun. The officers fired three shots, hitting the man in the torso.

He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. One of the officers was treated for a knee injury and the other for tinnitus from the gunshot sounds.

Authorities recovered a gun and ammunition at the scene.
