Suffolk County Police Officer Kevin Wustenhoff heard dispatchers say around 10 a.m. Saturday that a woman was in labor on the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank (YAH'-pank).
He located the car from a description. The 21-year-old woman was inside, with her mother driving. The baby's father was snowbound in Brentwood.
The family's SUV was crawling along the highway. Rather than wait for an ambulance, Wustenhoff decided to drive the woman in his police SUV to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
The father of three says he talked her through proper breathing on the 15-mile trip.
Delivery appeared imminent when they arrived. But the baby wasn't yet born by Saturday night.
