Origami classes for kids and adults

PARK SLOPE

A studio in /*Brooklyn*/ is devoted to origami and even children can get involved.

"Origami is a very unique skill, not only are you working with your hands you're working with your imagination," said Ben Friesen, Origami instructor.

Folding the paper requires patience, practice and some instruction.

At Taro's Origami Studio in Park Slope, there are experts like Ben Friesen, a daily group class, and clever instructional videos on tablets.

"Origami is all written in the exact same language," Friesen said.

It's all in the language of diagrams.

From the diagrams you can create just about anything.

That's why Daniel Valesala loves it.

"The reason I like it is because it's like art and sculpture, and this is a flower for a wedding or a prom," Valesala said.

The dragon for example requires 275 folds.

Taro Yaguchi is a lawyer but he says being a lawyer doesn't grab people.

"If I introduce myself as origami artist everyone becomes happy actually," Yaguchi said.

He's hoping his eponymous origami studio offers some happiness to others, both kids and adults.

Taro's Origami Studio is open Tuesday through Saturday and you can drop in and create if you don't want to take a class.

Its $10 dollars for a 30 minute drop in session and supplies are included.
