Celebrating cheerleading champs in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE

"We all went in head strong knowing we got this, knowing what we had to do to make our win," cheerleader Janay Key said.

Not only did they win, but they brought home the gold.

"We didn't expect first place, we just wanted a medal," coach Elaina Edwards said.

This is the first time ever that both squads beat out teams from across the country, culminating weeks of hard work.

"We really didn't hold back. We went for it and if it didn't work, we'd try and fix the wheel and try and make it work, at the end, we said we're going to put everything out there and go for it," coach Chrissy Stanionis said.

We caught up with the girls, who not only love the sport, but also all that comes with it.

"The team vibe and the bonding is a nice part of it," cheerleader Faavedra Dessesaure said.

"All these girls come from the Mod Squad so they're the foundation to what's created these umber one champs," coach Naishah Hempfield said.

The modified team, girls from junior high, also placed 6th at nationals.
