House explosion in Hempstead, Long Island

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.

The house, which is located on Perry street in Hempstead, collapsed around 3:00 p.m.

Two people suffered minor injuries.

The house was apparently vacant and may have been in the process of being foreclosed.

The Red Cross says that two neighboring homes were damaged in the blast. They are helping the families that live in the affected homes with emergency housing and money for food and clothes.

A National Grid spokeswoman says they have not found any sign of natural gas causing the explosion, but they're continuing to investigate.

A neighbor who lives on the street behind the house that was flattened says she heard a loud boom that reminded her of an earthquake.

She says a window from the damaged home hit the rear of her home and shattered.
