Celebrating Duke Ellington

NEW YORK Apr 25, 2013 - Apr 27, 2013

No living trumpet player can claim a closer relationship to musician-teacher-humanitarian Dizzy Gillespie—personally or musically—than Jon Faddis, who met his friend and mentor at age 15.

A veteran of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and former musical director of Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra, Faddis will direct The Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York through new transcriptions from Gillespie's path-breaking 40s big band, repertoire from the spectacular 50s edition that toured the Middle East and South America under the auspices of the State Department, and lead a quintet through selected gems from Gillespie's consistently superb small group recordings.
