The old South Ferry station is now open again after its replacement was destroyed during the storm, and No. 1 train service resumed Thursday morning.
The new $500 million station that opened in 2009 suffered massive damage from the storm surge and is expected to be closed for three years. So the old station is now filling in, with a shorter platform that will force passengers to exit the station via the first five cars.
South Ferry is the last stop on the No. 1 train and is a critical link for commuters taking the Staten Island Ferry.
The closure had forced many to walk several blocks uptown to the Rector Street station to a catch a train.
Before the old station could reopen, workers had to update electrical equipment, clean and replace tiles, put in new turnstiles and fill gaps between the trains and the platform.
