Fire tears through row of buildings in Newark

NEWARK

The blaze broke out in an apartment building on Orange Street just before midnight.

Heavy flames quickly spread to two neighboring buildings and soon threatened the entire block. Fire shot through the roof of one, while a gusty wind left the path of the flames unpredictable. Firefighters were also hampered by a fire hydrant that didn't work.

Residents were left homeless in all three buildings, which house businesses on the first floor and apartments above. At least six apartments were destroyed, and some families barely escaped before the flames engulfed the entire building.

One resident who just moved into a third-floor apartment said she lost everything.

"I just moved in two days ago," Leslie Miranda said. "Like I literally moved everything in. Now I'm done."

Miranda was treated at an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It was not immediately known how many residents were left homeless. Fortunately, none of the injuries was considered serious.
