Hundreds gather in New Jersey to push immigration reform

JERSEY CITY, N.J.

U. S. Sen. Robert Menendez was among the speakers at Saturday's rally in Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Also in attendance were members of New Jersey's congressional delegation, labor union members, religious leaders, immigrants and immigration advocates.

Organizers say the rally gave them a forum to express their support for proposed changes in federal immigration laws.

They say the reforms would put an estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally on a path to citizenship.

An estimated 2,000 people came out for the rally, which also drew a small group of roughly a dozen counter-protesters who were kept away from the main rally by police.
