President Obama OKs funds for Suffolk snowstorm costs

RIVERHEAD

Federal funding will be available to state and local governments for emergency work on facilities damaged by the blizzard that dumped up to 30 inches of snow.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand had pushed for the declaration, which makes Suffolk County eligible to apply for public assistance.

The snowstorm, which struck during the rush hour Feb. 8, left hundreds of motorists stranded in their vehicles on the Long Island Expressway and other roads for more than 12 hours.
