Say What?

April 24, 2013

First, word that police in Watertown have recovered one semi-automatic handgun. Just one. And no guns were recovered from the boat where the surviving Tsarnaev brother was discovered on Friday.

Just one gun. What happened to the "heavily armed" brothers? It's a surprise but of course these were guys who did get in a shootout with cops, threw explosives at police, and killed a cop on the campus of MIT. Oh, yeah, and set off two bombs at the Boston Marathon that killed 3 people and hurt scores. Allegedly, is what I mean to say.

The other say-what story is in Newtown, Connecticut yup, the same Newtown where 26 people were murdered in the Sandy Hook Elementary gun massacre. The good folks of Newtown have voted down the town's new budget; it was up 5 percent over last year, in part because it contained more than $1 million in added security for all Newtown schools. They've lost some of their confidence. That's how one critic of the vote put it, when asked to explain why the poster town for gun violence at schools voted down the added security (along with the entire new budget).

The next can't-believe-it story is the fee increase today – first by United Airlines, then by US Air, and we assume soon to be followed by others – to $200 to change a domestic travel reservation. Because, c'mon, we know how hard it is to open a computer file and type in a new date, right? Pure profit, that's what it is. Which I guess is fine; that's the system we live in right? Except that it seems so wrong. People change their plans, and it's not like they're not buying another airline ticket. Why charge such exorbitant fees? And just in time for the busy summer travel season. I'm just sayin'.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
