A Columbia University football player has been arrested and charged with a hate crime for allegedly threatening an Asian student at the Morningside Heights campus on Sunday.

Police say Chad Washington, a 6-foot-4, 242-pound defensive lineman from Oakland, California, followed the victim out of his dorm room, grabbed him by the shirt, yelled anti-Asian slurs at him and threatened to beat him up.

The victim, a 19-year-old student, called police, and Washington was arrested.

He faces a felony charge of aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

Washington was with six other people at the time, but so far he is the only person charged.
