Woman arrested in shooting death of Jersey City boy

JERSEY CITY

Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Gaetano Gregory announced that Janice Everett, 25, of Rahway, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with murder as an accomplice, armed robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

"It's very painful right now, but I'd rather have my son back," Gywan Levine said.

Levine is still in bed, but dressed in his Sunday best. He has hospital bracelets still on his wrist and a bullet hole in his leg, but a deeper and more painful hole remains in his heart.

Days after his son was shot and killed in front of him, after a bullet tore through his own leg breaking his bone, he musters up enough courage and enough strength to get to his son's wake.

"No matter what, no matter how much pain I was gonna be in, I was gonna be there," he said.

Last Friday, Gywan was playing basketball with his son Gywan Jr. out in front of their home when two men walked up to them and started shooting. We now know it was a robbery, but the end result was murder.

12-year-old Gywan Jr. was shot through the shoulder. He lost too much blood.

Now candles and kind words line the steps of his house along with a deflated football, his favorite sport. He had so much promise.

"I taught him everything he knew about football. He began to be an athletic guy. But I guess it wasn't supposed to be," Alphonso Prioleau, the victim's uncle, said.

On the same day as Gywan's wake, 25-year-old Janice Everett was arraigned on felony murder charges as an accomplice.

Police say she was working with the two men that day. A day Gywan will never be able to erase from his memory.

"I haven't expressed my anger as much as I want to and I know tonight's service is gonna be hard, but I gotta hang in there," he said, for his son.

During Eyewitness News' interview the skies opened up. Gywan said it was God crying for his oldest son. He has another son, a 6 year old who now knows his brother is in heaven.

The Prosecutor's Homicide Detectives are actively continuing the investigation and are looking for at least two other suspects.

One is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years of age, 5-foot-11 to 6-feet tall, medium to dark complexion, medium build and bald or low-cropped hair.

The other is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years of age, 5-foot-9 to 6-feet tall, medium to dark complexion and medium build.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345.
