Rain, storms cause flash flooding, damage

The powerful storms flooded streets in parts of the area, leaving drivers no choice but to get out and push their cars away from danger.

A lot of motorists were stuck in high water near Route 1 and 9 in Elizabeth. Plastic garbage bags clogged the drains, making it difficult for the water to recede.

Rain and flash flooding were not the only problems. In New City, Rockland County, high winds toppled trees, including one that landed on a house causing significant damage.

The stormy weather also caused some delays at the three major airports in New York City. By early Monday, delays were down to 15 minutes or less at airports on the East Coast.

The rain also shortened the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees game on Sunday to 5½ innings.
