Bail denied for teen driver in deadly crash on Upper West Side

NEW YORK

Franklin Reyes was arraigned Wedensday night in connection with the incident, which began when police say Reyes fled a traffic stop for reckless driving.

He allegedly led police on a chase up Amsterdam Avenue, then turned on 97th Street and crashed into Ariel Russo and her grandmother.

Russo died, and her grandmother was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with injuries to her legs and spine. She was later upgraded to stable.

Officers say Reyes would have kept going after the fatal collision if they hadn't blocked him in.

Reyes admitted that he heard the police officers telling him to pull over and observed the lights and sirens of the police car behind him. He was not a licensed driver in New York State and only had a learner's permit.
