Heavy rain bringing bad mosquito season

POMONA, N.Y.

A close inspection of standing water in Pomona confirms the suspicion.

Larvae are present and mosquitoes are breeding.

In the wake of heavy rainfall, the Rockland County Health Department has been busy monitoring and treating swampy areas, but officials are also urging homeowners to do their part and clear any water that has collected around their property.

Mosquitoes can emerge after as little as a week to 10 days in standing water.

Besides larvacide, Rockland County has been using minnows as a mosquito fighting tool for the last few years.

This spring, Westchester County began distributing the tiny fish as well.

But this recent relentless rain has created a rash of potential new breeding spots.

But experts at Fordham University's Calder Center Field Station say a lot of rainfall can actually reduce the population of some species, especially the type of mosquitoes that transmit West Nile Virus.
