Police on Long Island are scouring an area in Suffolk County, trying to track down a man who escaped from police custody overnight Monday.

The man was handcuffed as he was being driven to Stony Brook University Hospital for a psychological evaluation.

Around midnight, the officer came upon an accident at Route 347 and Plaisted Avenue in Smithtown.

The officer exited the vehicle to check for injuries.

That's when the man got out of the car and took off.
