Father in hospital after driver crashes into bodega

EAST VILLAGE

"It was a terrible accident," said the victim's son, Rukanul Islam.

However, police are calling it criminal – they say 32-year-old Shaun Martin was under the influence around 7 Wednesday morning when he barreled down 2nd Avenue in a white Nissan Altima. First, they say he took out a tree, then a Muni-Meter, fire hydrant, then lastly, crash-landed into a 63-year-old father of four at the corner of East 4th. He was arranging flowers, so his back was turned.

"Everybody's very upset. My mother, she can't stop crying," said Islam.

Now, the Bangladeshi immigrant has a two-month recovery ahead of him. His son says his dad is still at Bellevue with severe leg and head injuries. He has yet to regain consciousness.
