The incident happened just before 3 a.m. Tuesday near West 64th Street and West Drive, at a time when crime in the park has seen a spike.
Police say the 30-year-old victim was an actress the suspect met at a local bar after her stage performance. They apparently walked into the park together, and that's when the man turned on her.
He allegedly attempted to rape her, but she was able to fight him off with her purse. The victim, who authorities say was intoxicated, went to police.
The suspect, described only as a Hispanic male, took off on foot.
The park has seen an increase in crime in the last year, mostly dealing with drug offenses and thefts.
