New Yorkers who like the idea of throwing tomatoes at each other got their chance at Brooklyn's first-ever Tomato Battle.

The event took Saturday at Floyd Bennett Field, a former airport that is now a park.

Approximately 5,000 people to showed up to hurl 40,000 pounds of tomatoes. The cost was $50 plus another $10 for a shuttle bus from the Brooklyn College subway station.

The massive food fight is modeled on a Spanish festival called La Tomatina.

The company that runs the U.S. version has hosted events in other cities including Denver and San Diego.

Organizers say they only use tomatoes that are overripe and would otherwise be thrown away.
