Man in custody in July 4th cop shooting in Brooklyn

EAST NEW YORK

Authorities say 21-year-old Michael Faison was taken into custody Wednesday in Maine.

Investigators say he shot Officer Jamil Sarwar from the roof of the Cypress Hills Housing Project in Brooklyn.

Sarwar was wounded in the leg.

Police believe Faison was involved in a shootout with a gang when his bullet hit the officer.

Investigators say Sarwar was responding to a call of a shooting when the suspect. He and his partner ducked for cover inside the lobby of a building, where Sarwar realized he had been struck in the thigh as the gunman fled.

Sarwar was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Anyone with additional information in regards is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
