The half-century-old pedestrian walkway over Surf Avenue, which linked the West Eight Street train station to the Coney Island Boardwalk, was cut up by workers using heavy machinery overnight Thursday.
The bridge was dismantled amid safety concerns and fears that it was likely to become unstable in the next few years.
The city will instead broaden the sidewalks along Surf Avenue, install a crossing light at the intersection of W. Eighth Street, and create a new entrance to the Boardwalk at W. 10th Street.
Some community leaders wanted to keep the bridge, arguing it was a safer option than crossing busy Surf Avenue.
