Unsafe staircase forces evacuations in Crown Heights

NEW YORK

The landlord of 567 St John's Place was ordered to fix the staircase back in May.

Buildings' Department inspectors went to check on the progress today and realized it had not been fixed.

The staircase in question goes from the 2nd floor to the 3rd floor.

The building has been vacated and residents won't be allowed back in until stairwell repairs are completed and inspected by DOB officials.

The Red Cross is responding to assist with resident re-location.

It is a 4 story apartment building with 8 apartments inside.

The vacate order came as a surprise to the tenants living there, who were told to grab what they could carry and get out.

The landlord spoke to police, and told us the stairs will be fixed Tuesday.

Late Monday night, residents on the first two floors were allowed back, but have been ordered to stay out of the stairwell.
