Eyewitness News investigation leads to more training for Rikers guards

NEW YORK

In response to a bloody gang fight inside Rikers Island, jail guards will receive extra training.

The August 5 melee lasted for about 45 minutes.

Eleven inmates and a correction officer were injured.

The extra training will include hands-on drills in stopping major fights, administering tear gas and handling hostage situations.
