Federal funding could help thousands of people on Long Island protect their homes from future storms.

More than $700 million would help repair the south shore after Superstorm Sandy and help protect homes and roads.

The plan would allow for more than 4,000 homes to be raised at no cost to the owners.

The funding would come from the nearly $51 billion Sandy aid bill.
