Co-workers, families, friends walk to stop diabetes

NEW YORK Here's more about it, and how you can take part, from the American Diabetes Association.

~~*~~

On Saturday, September 28th and September 29th thousands of people across the Greater New York area will come together to Stop Diabetes® for the nearly 26 million American children and adults with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes and their families, friends, colleagues and caregivers.

Across New York and across the country, the American Diabetes Association will hold Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes events to raise awareness about diabetes and fundraise to fight this disease, which affects so many, specifically in the New York area. Proceeds benefit the Association, which funds diabetes research, delivers services to hundreds of communities, and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

The Step Out walks in the Greater New York area will be held on Saturday September 28th at Brookfield Place Plaza in Battery Park City in Manhattan as well in Westchester at Tibbett's Brook Park at 355 Midland Avenue Yonkers, New York 10704. On Sunday, September 29th, another walk will be held at Jones Beach in Long Island, NY. Registration for all walks begins at 8 am and the walk starts at 10 am. After the walk at all three events, stay tuned for live music, refreshments, dancing, and inspiring stories from Red Striders, or persons living with diabetes.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for people with diabetes and helps to control glucose levels; and Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes provides an opportunity for people come together for a fun, healthy activity.
