The creator of the new series The Goldbergs used real videotapes that he shot of his own wacky family to convince ABC executives to put his show on the air.

I've seen the videos shot 30 years ago when the future producer was a teenager, and they are so funny, it's no wonder The Goldbergs have now found a home on Tuesday nights on ABC.

The Goldbergs are based on a real family as it existed in the 1980's before the internet or cell phones, when the preferred method of communication was in your face.

"They bicker out of love. Let's be very clear about that," Wendi McLendon-Covey said.

McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin play the parents of Adam, who never stops videotaping them. His grandpa is played by George Segal.

"He's better off-screen than on. Well, they're pretty much equal," Sean Giambrone, who plays Adam, said.

There was a time when a movie actor wouldn't be caught dead on television, but times have changed.

"The world. Communication. Television got better," Segal said.

Network television in particular has improved, says George's co- star who is a veteran of one of cable TV's funniest shows, Curb Your Enthusiasm.

"Anyone who's a Curb Your Enthusiasm fan - Do you think I'm going to do anything else that just stinks to make money? No, I'm not. That's just not who I am," Garlin said.

Garlin predicts everyone will be able to relate to the Goldbergs, but moms and their daughters in particular might respond to Hayley and Beverly.

"That mother/daughter thing where it's push and pull and like I love you and I hate you, but you're mine and you're my baby but you're wanting to drive and go to college. I think that's going to resonate with a lot of people," McLendon-Covey said.

Wendi plays a Smother,a character she defines as a mom who loves her kids so much, with such fierce intensity, that they just want to run away.

Watch the premiere of The Goldbergs on Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 7 and WATCH ABC.
