Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D preview

NEW YORK

The show's star and his car were in Times Square on Tuesday to help launch the most anticipated new series on ABC.

Agent Phil Coulson is looking pretty good for an operative who appeared to die on the big screen last year. Despite his apparent demise in The Avengers, it turns out just like the old saying goes: reports of his death proved to be exaggerated.

Clark Gregg moves from the big screen to network TV playing the leader of a team of people who must rely on their wits because they lack the super powers others have.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. is a show about the world of super-heroes as seen through the eyes of everyday people," director Joss Whedon said.

The Avengers director has returned to his roots in television with a series designed to please fans of Marvel comics and those less familiar with the Marvel mythology.

"Looking at some of the stories that didn't get the grand franchise movie treatment - stories that are smaller, but also involving heroics," Whedon said.

He promises stories with heart, drama and plenty of action, but a sense of humor too.

The agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. number just half a dozen regulars, but each has been chosen with care.

"It's about the relationship among the agents as well as with the people with the super powers, and it's about how they're going to cope with and deal with things as a team," Ming-Na Wen, who stars as Agent Melinda May, said.

If all goes according to plan, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could be part of a renaissance of great drama in prime-time.

"And that's exciting to me. I watch a lot of television now and I haven't always. I think there are brilliant shows on television and I think it's exciting for us to be something new," Gregg said.

When we said this series was highly anticipated, that's no hype. The Facebook page for agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already has more than one million fans and the series doesn't even premiere until tonight! That's almost twice the number of fans that for any other new television show this fall.

Watch the premiere of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 7 and WATCH ABC.
